Kofi Annan: Opportunity for fresh start

New Orleans Sun Sunday 14th December, 2003

United Nations Secretary-General considers the capture of Saddam Hussein, the epitome of the former regime. In a short press release issued Sunday from the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Kofi Annan called the capture of the former Iraqi president an important event.

Annan said It offers an opportunity to give fresh impetus to the search for peace and stability in Iraq, on the basis of an inclusive and fully transparent process.

Annan reiterated the readiness of the United Nations to do everything possible to help Iraqis, if asked and as circumstances permit.

The last U.N. special representative to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Melo, was killed with another 20 people when a car bomb exploded outside the hotel housing U.N. personnel in Baghdad last Aug. 19.
