TUNIS, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia has foiled seven illegal immigration attempts to cross the Mediterranean to the Italian coast, the Tunisian Ministry of the Interior said Wednesday.
The statement said units of the Tunisian Maritime Guard have arrested 80 Tunisian illegal immigrants aged between 17 and 41.
Large sums of money in Tunisian dinar and foreign currencies have been seized during these operations which took place on Monday night.
According to official figures released Monday by the Tunisian Forum of Economic and Social Rights, 5,655 Tunisian illegal immigrants have arrived the Italian coast between Jan. 1, 2020 and July 31, 2020.
Thousands of illegal immigrants attempt to cross the Mediterranean every year as Tunisia is one of the main points of access to Europe through irregular channels.
