It is possible to make a huge difference in the performance, durability, value, and price of any entrance mat. Many of the 'performance' can be attributed to the materials that entrance mats are made from. Knowing the properties of various door mat materials can help to specify entrance matting that is durable and can withstand the job.
What Property Do Door Mat Materials Possess?
Some mats are more effective at wicking away moisture than others. Others have quick-drying properties and retain their structure, making them easier to crush. However, other materials are simply more durable. Mats should be made from recycled matting.
What Are Some Common Surfaces For Dust Mats?
Doormats and entrance matting are made of nylon, polypropylene (coir), cotton, microfibre, natural rubber, and coir.
Nylon
Nylon is a synthetic fabric and is often referred to as the 'creme de la crème' of entrance mat materials. This is because it is made from high-quality synthetic fiber. There are many varieties of nylon. Polyamide, for instance, is the most common type for heavy-duty entrance matting. This is why nylon is so popular in commercial areas, such as entrances to shopping centers or public transportation where there is high footfall. It offers the most resilient carpet material, with good crush resistance properties.
Polypropylene
Entrance matting made of a thermoplastic polymer and Polypropylene fibers is extremely popular. Their abrasive texture makes them a great scraper. This makes it very efficient in scraping dry powder. Polypropylene entrance mats are durable and can be used in multiple areas. They can also be used as dirt-barrier runners for reception areas.
Coir- Dust Mats Made With Coconut Fiber
Coir is the original doormat. Today, more modern materials are used for commercial entrances. Coir is made from coconut shell husks. The husks are coarse and give coir its bristly, 'brushing-like' properties. Coir has slow drying times and is easy on the soil. Although coir is still widely used in its 'door mats' form, commercial buildings should be avoided because it isn't wheelchair-friendly.
Cotton
Cotton, another natural fiber, has many benefits when used in doormats for indoor domestic use. Cotton absorbs moisture like a towel. It is also known for its fast-drying properties and absorbency. It can be used for oily, grease-carrying, wet, or dry dirt, but not for oily, grease-carrying, moisture. Although the cotton pile is susceptible to becoming flattened, it can still be washed and restored to its original form. Many of these cotton doormats can be found here.
Natural Rubber / Nitrile Rubber Doormats
Rubber (especially Nitrile Rubber), is suitable for heavy-duty outdoor entrance areas. Rubber doormats do not crack like PVC. You have many choices when it comes to rubber floor mats. Some feature open holes, others have a solid texture. Rubber doormats that have open holes can be used as dirt scrapers. Rubber doormats have non-slip properties.
Popular Backing Materials
Following are the popular backing materials:
Nitrile Rubber, Synthetic Rubber
Nitrile backing is extremely popular, especially in the rental market, because it resists washing well. It is also less flammable than natural rubber and more resistant to chemicals and oils. The average Nitrile-backed matting will last a lot longer. The Nitrile rubber backing is more stable on smooth floors.
Pvc
Vinyl chloride plastic, also known as 'Vinyl,' is the more affordable option. However, it should be carefully placed because it is not suitable to live in very cold areas. PVC can become brittle in extreme climates.
