Laptops are lighter, smaller, lighter, and faster than ever, with their screens being more vivid than ever. It has become increasingly difficult to repair all of this technology because it is packed in a shrinking form factor. Today's Ultrabooks are thinner than laptops of a few years back, but they also have fewer replaceable or repairable parts. Only a certified technician can repair laptops that can be repaired.
Here are five reasons that repairs to the latest laptops have become more expensive.
Use Of Proprietary Components: This is one of many reasons that laptop repairs have become so expensive. Many manufacturers make their components to fit the product. This helps keep them light and compact. It can be difficult to find replacement parts for a laptop that has been replaced by a new model. Some manufacturers don't even stock replacement parts for their laptops. The laptop repair technician will need to find an alternate repair method or declare the machine unrepairable. It doesn't matter what, it's costly!
More Integrated Circuits: Integrated circuits are the main reason that the size of consumer electronics shrinks almost daily. The biggest problem with ICs, as they are often referred to, is that they don't have hinges or screws that can be lifted to allow for the removal of faulty parts. It is difficult to find a replacement for an IC that has failed. 80% of the ICs in laptops cannot be bought by a regular repair center and even those that can, are extremely expensive. This increases the cost of any repair job. While some laptop repair engineers are skilled at improvising, many times these choices can lead to a laptop that doesn't last for very long. If the warranty is still valid, the alternative is to sending the laptop back to its manufacturer for repairs.
New Components Cannot Be Repaired. Let's face the facts - Apple's Retina screen may look great, but not even an authorized laptop repair technician can take it apart to fix lighting problems or malfunctioning panels. Apple and similar manufacturers have sealed everything within to make sure the Retina display is flawless. Technicians cannot remove the display from its frame or take it apart without removing any screws or hinges. From a consumer's perspective, this makes it difficult and costly to repair the display.
The Cost Of Connecting Wires Has Risen Steadily. Things like the keyboard connector and the screen connection cable seem to vary from one manufacturer. Some laptops use a particular type of connector that is not interchangeable with others. These wires can fail, and a simple fix by a technician to replace them can become costly due to rising costs. The screen's cable is the most common component that fails in 90% of laptops. However, it can be quite costly for high-resolution laptops.
Fault Detection Can Take Hours: While components were bigger in the past, they made it easier to detect failure points. Experts say that it is becoming more difficult to locate failure points today due to shrinking components. Repairs of laptops that used to take an hour or two can now take a whole day. The sheer number of screws, adhesive, and tape required to repair laptops can make it even more complicated. Experts are the only ones who can do these repairs.
